Past Groups: Walking Tour Of Chianti Region May 2019

May is one of the absolute best times to visit Italy, and is an especially wonderful time to go hiking in the Chianti region. Our group met up for a few days in Florence, where we toured around the city and took a half day side trip to Lucca and Pisa. Lucca is an adorable town that is best toured on bike. It’s a medieval town surrounded by a wall and has more churches than any other city I’ve visited in Italy. In Florence we stayed in the gorgeous Hotel Pendini, right in the heart of the city. https://www.hotelpendini.it

On Day 3, we met up with our guide David Charnes, of Charnes Tours (who also organizes bike tours by the way!). We began our hiking adventure with a night in Montalcino at the quaint Hotel dei Capitani http://www.deicapitani.it/en/index.html and an evening tasting wine at the Enoteca at the Fortress of Montalcino. The Brunellos were delicious!

The next day we hiked from Montalcino to Bagno Vignoni, a beautiful village known for its thermal baths. We did encounter some rain that day, and at one point had to enlist a friendly farmer and his tractor to help our tour guide get his van up a very muddy hill. All part of the adventure! Dinner that evening was at the beautiful hotel Posta Marcucci. I can say that I have never stayed in a cleaner or better run boutique hotel. Very impressive! https://www.postamarcucci.it/en/

On our 5th day we walked from Bagno Vignoni to Pienza. On the way we stopped for lunch at the Il Casale cheese farm, enjoyed a tour of their factory and had a spectacular meal with wine. https://podereilcasale.com/it/ That evening we enjoyed dinner and wine in Pienza, and spent a restful evening in the Chiostro di Pienza Hotel.

Our final day hiking was a sunny and beautiful 10 miles to Montepulciano. The highlight of our evening was dinner at the famous Aquacheta restaurant, famous for their Florentine steaks. The owner is quite theatrical, and the food is delicious! https://www.acquacheta.eu
